This study was carried out to understand the status of exposure to welding fume and manganese in some workers, Gyeongju. We conducted the measurement of working environment for 10 accessory companies and 48 sites of motor vehicles or ships in the focusing welding process by CO2 gas from Jan 1 to Dec 31, 2003. The concentration of welding fumes and manganese were measured in 5 companies and 25 sites in accessory companies for motor vehicles and 5 companies and 23 sites in accessory companies for ships. The concentration was expressed as geometric mean and standard deviation. We analyzed the differences in concentration of welding fumes and manganese between motor vehicles or ships through Mann-Whitney U test using the SPSS 12.0 for Windows package. The geometric mean of welding fumes concentrations was significantly higher (p<0.01) in accessory companies for ships at 5.13 §·/m3 (Min; 1.08, Max; 16.86) than accessory companies for motor vehicles at 0.81 §·/m3 (Min; 0.13, Max; 5.11). The geometric mean of manganese concentrations was significantly higher (p<0.01) in accessory companies for ships at 1.40 §·/m3 (Min; 0.01, Max; 4.45) than accessory companies for motor vehicles at 0.02 §·/m3 (Min; 0.002, Max; 0.312). And compared between TLV of ministry of labor in Korea and ACGIH, that in Korea was less strict than ACGIH. So, in the cases of manganese, the sites exceeded by ACGIH TLV was two times than by that in Korea. Our study suggest that industrial hygiene such as ventilation system or personal protective measures is very important in accessory companies for ships. In the future, further studies for relationship between individual exposure to hazards in working environment and health status must be needed.
